Donald Link is the Beard-Award winning chef at Herbsaint and Cochon in New Orleans. This Saturday he’s going to be cooking some hogs for an event in Bywater (past the Marigny on the River on the Esplanade side of the Quarter). Our friends at SouthernFoodways describe the event as combining art, food, and foosball (?) and say the price is an unbelievably low “$5 or so.” It’s being staged by New York artist Allison Meehan, who “has envisioned quite a carnival for the city–it involves pig and art and foosball, at a space called the Brickyard, set amid the ruins of what was once a Bywater neighborhood molasses warehouse.” Not tLocation: The Brickyard, Bywater, 3000 block of Chartres Street.
Foosball starts at noon or so
Feed starts at 3:00 or so

"The City Council recently approved the expenditure of $30 million in Community Development Block Grant funds for the public park, clearing the way for construction of the landmark project to begin before the end of the year."
"The first phase will transform the area between Esplanade Avenue and Mazant Street. Now a gritty industrial zone marred by burned-out cargo docks, the area is set to become verdant green space replete with bike paths, pavilions, two piers and even electricity-generating windmills. If everything goes according to plan, the park will open in 2011."
"The designs reveal transformations of several decrepit wharves that now block pedestrian access to the waterfront. The fire-ravaged Mandeville Street Wharf will be replaced by a covered pavilion that could be used for outdoor concerts or other events. A wharf at Gallier Street would be rebuilt as a pier, allowing pedestrians to walk on a deck over the river. A second pier is planned at th...

IN a back room at his elegant restaurant, Herbsaint, the chef Donald Link has a conventional office filled with electronic devices, a photograph of his wife and children and four nondescript black swivel chairs.
There’s just one maniacal touch: his sausage closet. Inside it, where others might stash paper supplies or cleaning products, he has rigged the space with S hooks and loops of string. Like a secret, surreal forest of meat, big sausages dangle vertically from wall to wall. The air is kept at a constant 55 degrees — a sausage’s favorite temperature, as it happens. Nearby is a spray bottle of water with a bit of vinegar in it that Mr. Link uses to clean them off and encourage a dappling of beneficial mold.
“I couldn’t help it,” Mr. Link said. “I ran out of room everywhere else.”
It’s all preparation for his newest venture, Cochon Butcher, which opened Tuesday. The 1,000-square-foot combination meat market and 25-seat cafe is inside the same century-old brick warehouse th...

Corner of Magazine and Girod Street
Ready or not, it's carnival time! Our Saturday market bakers, Lisa Barbato of Rivista and Angela Wilson of Voodough Bakery, are getting us in the spirit with their freshly baked king cakes. Lisa has buttery French king cakes and Angela has mini cakes that make a delicious, only in New Orleans market breakfast. According to Mardi Gras guru Arthur Hardy, the king cake dates back to 1871 when a young lady was given a large cake that contained a golden bean - a sign that she had been chosen to be the first queen of Mardi Gras. Embrace our city's rich culinary and cultural history this Saturday. Grab a king cake, then stick around for the DeSoto Street Band, live from 9:30-11:30am.

Create a Signature Julep
Tales of the Cocktail in partnership with Culinary Concierge Magazine and CocktailTimes.com invite you to submit a winning recipe for the Official Cocktail Competition of the 7th Annual Tales of the Cocktail.
For our seventh anniversary, we are stirring things up with our annual cocktail competition. If you think your skills are up to the challenge, we would like you to create a julep that we can use as our official cocktail at this year’s event.
Originally, the term julep would have been used to refer to a medicinal potion, but in the American South it was used to refer to a heavily iced beverage of some type of spirit, sugar and mint.
Today, when you think of a “mint julep” you usually think of that classic drink of the Kentucky Derby, served in its quintessential silver cup. In truth however a julep can take a variety of forms, and we’re looking to you as our ambassadors to help us illustrate this fact.
Bartenders all over the world have been turning b...

Wayne Read, has redirected his project into the heart of Jefferson Parish’s burgeoning film industry area: Elmwood.
Read, president and manager of Louisiana Film Studios LLC, has now turned his sights to the former Winn Dixie Distribution Center, located at 600 Edwards Ave. in Elmwood.
“We thought it was easier to acquire an existing facility and retrofit it rather than build from the ground up,” Read said. “We’ll be closing on the transaction in a few weeks. We’re keeping it very quiet, but we did have a soft launch at Sundance (Film Festival) and were well-received.”
Read says they will begin retrofitting the facility in the second quarter with partial production availability during construction and estimates completion by end of 2009. He is still seeking local investment partners.
The project scope includes a 25-acre site and 500,000 square feet under one roof that will be retrofitted and renovated. The studio will have six sound stages/studios encompassing 16,000 to...

WHY:
One night soon after the tragic murder of Wendy Byrnes in the French Quarter, a friend of Wendy's was mugged in the Marigny. Concerned friends sent out text messages to others warning them of the specific area to avoid and to be careful in general - and urging everyone to pass the message along. Ten copies of the same text message and three phone calls later, the idea to set up an SMS Crime Alert Network was born, with the intention of warning as many people as possible of recent and/or in-progress crimes without inundating anyone with multiple copies of the same message.
WHAT:
An SMS (text message) based Crime Alert notification network allowing community members to warn other community members of recent and/or in-progress crimes. Timely warnings will help community members steer clear of "hot spots", alert people of suspicious characters to watch out for, help track stolen vehicles and other items and further track crimes. Unfortunately the public officials i...

For the second year in a row, Soldiers' Angels volunteers in Louisiana are sending Mardi Gras to deployed soldiers. This year, the supported unit will be the 244th Louisiana Guard out of Hammond, which is currently deployed to Iraq. If enough items are gathered, an additional Guard unit will be added.

Ok Crafters. It's Mardi gras Time. That means it's time again for the Krewe do Craft to march. We will once again be marching down (part) of St. Charles Ave. on Sunday Feb. 22. Last year we were the hit of Mardi Gras, and I expect the same. But seriously, we did make a name for ourselves, and did get a lot of publicity. So what do we
need?
We need you. We pride ourselves on creating handmade costumes and handmade throws. So it?s time to get to work. This year's
theme Alice in Craftyland. That's right, we need Alice's, White Rabbits, cards, Cheshire cats, Queens?and the king. Or be creative
and create a less well known character. We also need your handmade throws, but understand using recycled beads as filler. Some should
have something to do with Alice in Craftyland?teacups, cards, rabbits
(none live please).
As for cost?we still don?t know, but we hope less than $20. The more
that join, the less it is. If you are interested, email me.

You don't have to have a sister Kate or even know the 1920s jazz novelty tune to shimmy until you drop...pounds, that is, and get in top physical condition through the ancient art of belly dance.
And now north shore women of all ages can explore this long revered art of body expression at the new All Points Belly Dance Studio near Mandeville operated by certified teacher Leigh "Safira" Dokos.
Dokos, 30, who lives in Old Mandeville, opened her studio during the first week of November, 2008, at 1970 Surgi Drive off Louisiana 59 north
of Mandeville.
"Belly dancing is one of the world's most recognized methods of attaining superb physical fitness for women by exercise techniques that tone and shape all areas of the body including those that pose the most problems over the years,'' Dokos said.
Dokos herself discovered the benefits of belly dance in an effort to get back in shape after the birth of her son and in 2006 received her
instructor certific...

All Shook Up
Directed by Gary Rucker
Choreography by Kelly Fouchi
January 16- February 8, 2009
Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm,
Sundays at 2pm
All Shook Up is a jukebox musical featuring the music of the classic rock star Elvis Presley, with a book by Joe DiPietro. The story is based on the plot of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
It's not a biographical revue. It takes place in 1955, somewhere in middle America, where one girl's dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger help a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll.

Downtown New Orleans | Corner of Magazine and Girod Street
Join us on two wheels rather than four to participate in our Crescent City Cycles celebration of human power over horsepower. R.U.B.A.R.B., a community bike shop in the Upper 9th Ward, will demonstrate how to fix flat tires for all interested market shoppers and our special guests, the Iberville Community Center Boys & Girls Club. At a time when many are losing health insurance due to layoffs or changes in job status, a Tulane University medical student is making it easier for families to find information about free health clinics in the area.
Second year medical student Richard Brucker created NolaFreeHealthCare.com, an online listing of New Orleans area clinics that offer free or low-cost medical care to those who don’t have insurance and can’t afford health care. The listing, which is also distributed via paper pamphlets at area homeless shelters and community centers, includes each clinic’s hours of operation, cost of health care, population served and the types of medical care offered at the facility.
“With the economy in a recession, people are struggling with health care costs and feel like they don’t have access to care,” Brucker says. “I want people to know that there are resources out there for them so that they can get the medical help they need.”
The listing was created more than a year ago ...

On Saturday, January 31st, at 10 in the morning, we will gather at the
statue of Martin Luther King (MLK and S. Claiborne) to hear the dreams
of our citizens. From there, we will march to the place of the meeting
of the minds, where we will discuss how to make Martin Luther King
Boulevard a Neighborhood of Nonviolence and a Street of Peace. If we
concentrate all our peace ideas, thoughts and actions on the
surrounding community, Martin Luther King Boulevard
will stand as a glimmering monument of hope through out the city, the
nation and the world.
In the meeting, we want for our circle to be a collection of preachers
and poets, artist and philosophers, mothers and fathers, saints and
sufferers, wandering youth and future leaders. At our gathering, we
want to see the Beloved Community come alive right there before us.
We at United for Peace in New Orleans would like to give our all to
the dream of peace so we will make our art the start of building ...

On Saturday, January 31, the Community Center of St Bernard will hold its Second Anniversary Celebration at 1107 LeBeau Street in Arabi. This year’s event will begin with a free dinner served from 5 - 7 PM, followed by a dance featuring live music by Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove from 7:30 – 10 PM.
Kirk Joseph, a founding member of New Orleans' Dirty Dozen Brass Band, is an acclaimed musician who is noted for his innovative style on the sousaphone. Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove is an assemblage of well-known local and national musicians includin...
