Posted on: January 27 2014 | Posted in: Latest News

All Jefferson Parish Government offices will be closed Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Parish government employees, with the exception of Emergency Management and necessary Public Works personnel, should not report to work on Tuesday. Parish employees should plan to return to work as scheduled on Wednesday, but should monitor local media and the Parish website www.jeffparish.net for the latest information.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for 6:00am Tuesday through 6:00am Wednesday.

Forecasters expect freezing rain and sleet to begin Tuesday morning, January 28, 2014, south of Lake Pontchartrain with temperatures dropping to below freezing as early as 3:00pm Tuesday afternoon with 15-20 mph winds. Sleet and freezing rain is expected to continue through Tuesday night ending Wednesday morning, January 29, 2014. Further, a hard freeze is expected Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Ice accumulations of .10 to .25 inches or more are possible between 6:00am Tuesday through 6:00am Wednesday.

Jefferson Parish is strongly urging residents to stay off the roadways as conditions will be extremely hazardous. Jefferson Parish Public Works crews are prepared to sand or close elevated roadways or bridges, if necessary.

Residents are asked to check on your neighbors and the elderly to make sure they have taken precautions for this freeze.

In extreme temperatures, outdoor animals should be brought inside. If you are unable to do so, please make certain the animal has some type of shelter or insulation as protection, such as blankets, towels, hay, or newspaper.

It is recommended homeowners wrap exposed pipes in insulation or layers of old newspapers with plastic to keep out moisture and protect against wind. Also, know how to shut off water valves in the event a pipe breakage occurs. When using fireplaces or heaters, take all precautions, such as not placing anything within three feet of a space heater, ensuring any fire is extinguished prior to going to bed, and never leave a heater or fire unattended.

Check or replace batteries in smoke and CO2 detectors.

Temporary, free housing for those needing shelter will be available at:

The Salvation Army

4530 S. Claiborne Avenue

New Orleans

Minimal space is available at:

The WayMakers Facility for women and children only

804 1st Avenue, Harvey, LA.

At this time, garbage and recycling will be collected as per regularly scheduled. If garbage or recycling collection routes are not completed on Tuesday due to inclement weather, crews will resume collection on Friday.

The Jefferson Parish Department of Public Works will be staffed with adequate resources to respond to emergencies related to this weather event. In case of Public Works-related emergencies, residents may call 736-6006 or Emergency Management at 349-5360.

The Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations and Communications Center (EOC) will be manned throughout this winter weather event and Emergency Management will continue to closely monitor this developing weather.
