The University of New Orleans is conducting a national search for a distinguished scholar after announcing a significant gift toward its $1million endowed chair in the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration.
Gloria Kabacoff, widow of the business leader Lester Kabacoff, presented $600,000 to the program that’s named for her late husband. Her money will be matched with $400,000 from the Louisiana Board of Regents through its trust fund for eminent scholars.
Lester Kabacoff, who died in 2004, was instrumental in the creation of UNO’s hotel-restaurant program 35 years ago. He is often credited with being the force behind the modern tourism era in New Orleans. As a developer, he built the Royal Orleans and New Orleans Hilton hotels and the Riverwalk Shopping Center. He was also instrumental in the construction of the New Orleans Morial Convention Center.
