The site of a former electrical supply shop at the edge of the French Quarter is about six months away from opening as a Homewood Suites by Hilton, an all-suite hotel brand.

A news release says the final beam has been placed and structural framework is completed for the $40 million Homewood Suites New Orleans French Quarter at 317 N. Rampart St, near the Saengar Theater.

The 4-story, 207-suite hotel developed by HRI Properties and built by Palmisano Contractors is expected to open by next April.

The project involved the demolition of a non-historic commercial building once occupied by Wm. B. Allen Supply Co. The electronic distributor moved its operation to Harahan prior to HRI buying the property.

HRI Lodging LLC, an affiliate of HRI Properties, will manage the hotel under a franchise agreement from Hilton Hotels. The project is an extension of HRI’s revitalization work at the former Iberville public housing complex across the street.

HRI is hoping to tap into a new client market stemming from the opening of the University Medical Center in Mid-City and the Veterans Affairs Hospital next year.

In addition, the new Rampart streetcar line is expected to be completed prior to the hotel opening.
