Nonstop flights boost Lakefront's expansion plans

By popular demand, nonstop flights to Memphis and the Florida Panhandle are back, and Lakefront Airport hopes its revival is soon to follow.

The routes that begin this month are part of a plan to bring the airport back to its pre-Hurricane Katrina life, when it saw more than 200 operations per day flying executives, military personnel and basketball teams looking for a quicker route from Interstate 10 into downtown.

The airport, which received four feet of water as Katrina pushed Lake Pontchatrain into it, has rebuilt most of its historic Art Deco terminal 10 years later. New hangars are in place and a major crack-and-seal coat repair project has been completed.
