Southwest Airlines is adding two new nonstop flights from New Orleans to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, and Columbus, Ohio. The new flights start in April.

Dan Landson, a Southwest Airlines spokesman, confirmed the new flights in an email, adding the routes are a response to traveler demand.

The Raleigh-Durham connection will be available twice a week on Fridays and Sundays. The Columbus flight will depart once a week on Sundays.

Southwest Airlines, based in Dallas, remains the dominant carrier at Louis Armstrong International Airport, shuttling roughly 4 million travelers to and from New Orleans in 2016. More than a third of passengers who flew into and out of the city do so on Southwest planes.

Southwest's new nonstop flights to Raleigh-Durham and Columbus begin the weekend of April 30, 2017.

The addition of a Southwest flight to Raleigh-Durham follows a similar announcement from Allegiant Airlines last year. Allegiant's nonstop flight to Raleigh-Durham International Airport starts Thursday (Feb. 16).
