The city’s downtown streetcar construction will soon veer into a major intersection, but access to the Saenger Theatre and nearby businesses will remain, officials said today.

Half of the intersection of Canal and North Rampart streets will be closed for about a month to prepare for the installation of new streetcar tracks. Traffic on Canal Street between Liberty and Burgundy streets in both directions will be decreased from three lanes to one lane before reopening. In addition, Rampart Street between Canal and Iberville streets will be shut down entirely, prompting drivers to utilize adjacent side streets.

The new routes will begin July 12 and continue until Aug. 11.
